Кларк, Аврелий Августин, вопреки мнению, распространенному в исследовательской литературе, не был сторонником идеи падения империи или её последовательного упадка, поскольку он такие идеи не высказывал и никак их не аргументировал — богослова принципиально не интересовали вопросы светской истории, в своем знаменитом труде «О граде Божьем» Августин говорил только о личном спасении каждого человека благодаря вере в Бога. Другими словами, как проследил Дж. Кларк, Августин рассуждал не об обществе (коллективе, совокупности граждан), а об отдельных людях (верующих) и полагал, что каждый верующий, вне зависимости от социально-политической ситуации, сложившейся в империи, после смерти сможет попасть в небесный град Божий, если в граде земном, т. е. на земле, он будет вести добродетельную и благочестивую жизнь.
